The Saint Lucia Bridge Association (SLUBA) concluded two exhilarating bridge tournaments recently, celebrating the nation’s Independence. The Independence Pairs Tournament took place on February 15, followed by the Independence Teams Tournament, sponsored by M Motors, on March 1. These events showcased the island’s finest bridge talent and brought the community together in a spirit of competition and unity.

After several rounds of intense competition at the Saint Lucia Yacht Club, Dexter Theodore and Irvin Smith emerged as winners over Enrico Lewis and Katherine Lawerence, with Naomi Patrick-Smith and Johnson Cenac taking third place.

The Independence Day Open Team-of-Four took place at the M Motors Showroom and the winners were Dexter Theodore, Irvin Smith, Naomi Patrick-Smith, and Johnson Cenac, beating Enrico Lewis, Katherine Lawerence, Nannette Yeyes, and Maria Plummer. Urban Dolor, Debra Spencer, Jacqueline Theodore, and Ian Hippolyte finished third.

“These tournaments embody the vibrancy of Saint Lucia,” the Association said in a brief statement, “bringing people together through skill and celebration. Thanks to M Motors’ generous sponsorship, SLUBA was able to elevate these events and honor our independence in style.”

Saint Lucia has approximately 30 active bridge players, 16 of whom competed in the Independence tournaments.

The SLUBA is in negotiations with the Ministry of Education to train school teachers so that they can, in turn, teach the game to their students. The local federation will host this year’s Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States tournament over the last weekend in July.
