The National Association of Driving Schools (NADS), has emphasised the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, including improved signage and the installation of ramps.
Herbert James, the Public Relations Officer for NADS, urged the government to launch public awareness campaigns via various media outlets to educate drivers about proper road usage and signage and encourage pedestrians to remain vigilant.
“We are primarily addressing issues in Castries, but there is a growing concern in Vieux Fort, where a few areas might urgently require ramps,” he told St. Lucia Times.
“We definitely need proper PR, media whether it be Facebook, television, the radio stations, but definitely in that capacity, the public need to be sensitised on the proper use of the road,” the NADS official asserted.
He specifically mentioned the proper use of pedestrian crossings.
James also noted that drivers must adopt a more empathetic approach towards fellow drivers and pedestrians to “minimise the number of road collisions.”
Moreover, he emphasised that pedestrians are also responsible for being mindful of their actions and navigating the roads in a way that keeps them aware of their surroundings.
“At night, pedestrians should wear brightly colored or reflective clothing, especially in poorly lit areas,” he advised.
Additionally, James called on drivers to maintain focus by avoiding distractions such as loud music and cell phone use while driving.
