Saint Lucia sailed to their second straight victory on the third day of the 21st Jean Pierre Caribbean Youth Netball Tournament in Barbados on Tuesday evening, defeating Dominica 35-19 at the Wildey Gymnasium. Dominica suffered their third consecutive loss, while Saint Lucia headed into Wednesday’s rest day unbeaten.
The match began tightly, with Saint Lucia holding a narrow 7-6 lead after the first period. Both teams attempted seven shots on goal, but while Clarise Nevais (2/2) and Naija Ferdinand (5/5) were flawless for Saint Lucia, Dominica’s Dian Augustine missed one of her six attempts.
By halftime, Saint Lucia had extended its lead to 18-12, outshooting Dominica 13-7 in the second period. Augustine bounced back with a perfect 5/5, but Valinda Winston managed only 1/2. For Saint Lucia, Ferdinand converted 7/9, and Nevais remained perfect at 4/4.
Dominica fought hard in the third but struggled against a tight defence, making just 4/8 as a team. Saint Lucia, meanwhile, capitalised with 8/10 – Ferdinand 5/6, Nevais 3/4 – to enter the final stanza ahead 26-16.
With strong support from the Saint Lucian community in Barbados, the young Helenites dominated the last period, holding Dominica to just three shots while taking 14, sinking nine. Ferdinand finished 4/7 (21/27 overall), and Nevais went 5/7 (14/17 total).
Saint Lucia’s next challenge comes Thursday against defending champions and hosts Barbados.
