The Saint Lucia U16 netball team.
Saint Lucia’s young netballers made a dominant start to the Jean Pierre Caribbean Youth Netball Tournament campaign, overpowering Antigua & Barbuda 31-7 at Barbados’ Garfield Sobers Gymnasium on Monday night.
The Helen of the West representatives controlled centre court throughout the under-16 contest, limiting their opponents to just 13 goal attempts – of which they converted a modest 58.3 per cent. Saint Lucia’s shooting proved far more clinical, with the team finishing at an impressive 73.8 per cent accuracy.
Captain Naija Ferdinand led the charge with 22 goals from 29 attempts (76%), including a stellar 7-from-8 performance in the final quarter. She received strong support from Hailey Nervais (perfect 5/5), Clarise Nervais (4/8) and Aska Kendra (4/5).
After establishing a 5-1 first-quarter lead, Saint Lucia extended their advantage to 14-4 by halftime. The gap grew to 19-6 after three quarters before a dominant 12-1 final period sealed the comprehensive victory.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, head coach Shem Maxwell saw room for improvement: “I felt the girls could have had a better game; too many errors on our part,” Maxwell said. “I was happy they won, but there is room for improvement.”
It was Antigua & Barbuda’s second heavy defeat after a 46-7 loss to defending champions Barbados. Saint Lucia next face Dominica on Tuesday, with the winless Dominicans coming off losses to Grenada and Barbados.
