Saint Lucia got their pursuit of the 2024 Winlott Inc Windward Islands Cricket Board Under-15 Championship title underway in fine fashion, beating Grenada by five wickets on Sunday at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground. Saint Lucia captain and player-of-the-match Jeanille Williams led in the field, and with ball and bat, ably supported by Daniel Lorde, Kaleb Charles, Kyle Stephens, and Trevern Edward.
Williams won the toss and elected to field. He started the Grenada innings behind the stumps, but laid down the gloves to pick up 3-21 from six overs. Lorde and Williams terrorized Grenada’s middle and lower order, Lorde capturing 3-7 from just 2.2 overs. Charles removed two of the top three batters, and ended with figures of 2-15 from five overs.
Grenada were eventually bowled out for 115 in 32.2 overs, Jamie Wickham 35 off 64 balls. But Saint Lucia head coach Alton Crafton would not have been pleased to see 33 wides, five no-balls, and three leg byes, extending the Grenada innings.
Saint Lucia’s response was ragged in parts, but 33 from the captain steadied the ship after the home team lost their fourth wicket on 78. Edward made 18 at the top of the order, and Stephens added 22 in a solid partnership for the second wicket.
Saint Lucia got to 116-5 to open their campaign with victory. St Vincent & the Grenadines beat the Commonwealth of Dominica by seven wickets at the Gros Islet Playing Field. Dominica were 96 all out, SVG bowling 19 extras.
On Monday at the DSCG, the home team will play St Vincent & the Grenadines. Tuesday will be a rest day, and the hosts will clash with the defending champion on Wednesday.
