The West Indies began their series against Sri Lanka on Sunday with a five-wicket victory. The first T20 International between the ICC third-ranked Men in Maroon and eighth-placed Sri Lanka took place in front of a packed house at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.

After winning the toss, the Windies opted to field, a decision captain Rovman Powell attributed to the damp conditions caused by pre-match rain.

The powerplay yielded 54 runs for the loss of two wickets, setting up an even start for both teams.

However, a strong middle-over period by the hosts shifted the momentum in their favor, thanks to an 82-run partnership between Kamindu Mendis (51) and captain Charith Asalanka (49).

The commendable fourth-wicket stand was broken by all-rounder Shamar Springer on his senior international debut.

Sri Lanka added 47 runs in the final five overs, posting a total of 179 after their 20 overs.

The Windies had a mixed day in the field, struggling with ground fielding at times, but compensating with some excellent catches.

In response, the Men in Maroon got off to a flying start, scoring 74 runs in the powerplay. A dominant opening partnership between Brandon King (63) and Evin Lewis (50), worth 107 runs, provided a strong foundation for the chase.

Despite a couple of wickets and some tight bowling from Sri Lanka, a boundary off the first ball of the final over secured the win for the Windies.

Man of the Match Brandon King noted each individual in the team has a “very clear” role and his own is to take risks and get the team off to a solid start. He was satisfied with his effort, particularly because it was his first performance following a recent injury.

Captain Rovman Powell was thrilled with his team’s start to this important series.

“It’s always important when you come to Sri Lanka to take an early lead, we know that Sri Lanka is a team that plays excellent cricket at home” he said.

The Sri Lankans have never defeated the Windies in a series at home. The host will now have to win the next two fixtures to achieve this daunting feat.
