Vanard Champions of Chaz Knockout Tapeball Tournament

Vanard are the champions of the 2025 edition of the Cepal Holdings Chaz Knockout Tapeball Cricket Tournament (Division 1), following a 29-run victory over 76 Savage in the final at the Balata Playing Field on Saturday night.

Batting first, the men from Vanard, who were losing finalists last year, delivered a dominant performance in the first innings, largely fueled by a remarkable effort from Lerry Auguste.

Auguste scored a sensational maiden tapeball century off 70 deliveries, propelling his team to an impressive 197-6 in their 20 overs. Larry Edward was the pick of the bowlers for 76 Savage, claiming 2-44. Notably, Edward opted to bowl pace instead of his traditional off-spin. Despite most bowlers conceding runs heavily, Tyrell Chicot stood out with a superb spell of 1-16 in his four overs.

In response, 76 Savage got off to a brisk start, thanks to opener Dane Edward. However, his dismissal in the third over slowed their momentum. Vanard were sloppy in the field, dropping several chances. Despite these missed opportunities, 76 Savage failed to capitalise.

Captain Dwight Thomas contributed a handy 21 runs off 17 deliveries, while Tyrell Chicot played an exceptional knock of 84 off 40 balls. However, the steady fall of wickets ultimately hampered their chase. Xavier Gabriel was the chief destroyer for Vanard, taking 3-32 in his four overs. He was well supported by Daniel Jn Baptiste (2-27) and Bradley Giddings (2-35).

The tournament is named in honour of the late cricketer Dhanraj ‘Chaz’ Cepal, a former Windward Islands youth player and an avid lover of the tapeball format. Man of the Match, Lerry Auguste, dedicated his performance to Chaz’s memory.

Man of the Match, Lerry Auguste receives his award from Daniel Cepal, uncle of Dhanraj ‘Chaz’ Cepal – in whose honour the tournament is named – and owner of Cepal Holdings Inc., the chief sponsor of the tournament.

“I’m very surprised that I scored 100, and this is my maiden hundred,” Auguste remarked. “I’m very proud of myself, and the guys pushed me. I did what I had to do, and it was a good knock for us. We are here supporting Chaz’s legacy. May he continue to rest in peace. We continue to play cricket for Chaz.”

Daniel Cepal, Chaz’s uncle and owner of Cepal Holdings Inc., the chief sponsor of the tournament, expressed his delight at the positive involvement of the young men in the community.

“It’s very nice to see that there are still young men involved in sports, putting effort into something constructive that uplifts society. I want to commend both teams and wish you all the best in your future endeavours,” he said.
