Trinidad and Tobago’s 49-year-old Energy Minister Stuart Young is set to become the twin-island republic’s new prime minister.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, who a few days ago announced his intention to resign before the end of his government’s term, said on Monday that the parliamentary caucus of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) has thrown its support behind Young to lead the party.
“We are very pleased to announce that the promise of a smooth transition is going according to plan,” the prime minister told reporters.
He said he will indicate his actual date of departure from the post sometime after the next meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government in Barbados next month, which he will attend.
Young, an attorney-at-law by profession, is the MP for Port-of-Spain North/St Ann’s West.
In a post on his Facebook page, he expressed gratitude to Rowley and fellow PNM Mps for their vote of confidence.
“I would like to sincerely thank my parliamentary colleagues for the confidence they have expressed in me. I also thank Dr the Honourable Keith Rowley, M.P., Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for his continued and exemplary leadership in guiding us through a historic process.
“I am proud to be a member of the People’s National Movement (PNM) and look forward to working tirelessly not only with all of our members but also with all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago as we continue working towards the building of our country and ensuring its future success,” Young wrote.
