More than 50 cyclists lined up in the Martiniqiue community of Robert at the weekend for the fourth Grand Prix Mille Éco Shop, with Saint Lucia’s Denver Alphonse once again returning strong results. The 17-year-old Entrepot Secondary School student was fifth in the Under-19 division for both the time trial and road race.

Sixth in his last outing in Martinique just about a month ago, the youngster from La Caye, Dennery turned in a time of 10:52 in the six-kilometre time trial and 4:16:45 in the 132.8-km road race. He was 1:28 behind the winner in the time trial and finished 46:56 behind the road race leaders. Overall, he was 27th and 35th.

Organised by Jeunesse Cycliste 231, Grand Prix Mille Éco Shop attracted cyclists and clubs from Martinique, Guadeloupe, and mainland France. Alphonse was the only non-French rider.

Mathys Nacitas of Madinina Bikers was the top time trial finisher in the U19 division, at 10:01, whilst Stefan Bennett of Jeunesse Cycliste 231 ended in 9:24 to finish first overall. Bennett was second to teammate Mickaël Stanislas in the road race. Both were clocked at 3:29:49 in a thrilling end to the contest. Mathéo Sivatte of UC Spiritaine was the number one U19 finisher in 3:38:43.

Alphonse will be hitting the road locally in next weekend’s Independence Criterium Championships, rescheduled from last month. The races on the Castries City Circuit will involve Saint Lucia’s top riders competing in various divisions from 1 p.m. on Sunday.
