The four primary schools in District 8, comprising Soufrière and Canaries, engaged in their interschool track meet at the Soufrière Stadium on Friday. When the dust had settled, Soufrière Combined School (Soufrière Infants & Primary) had triumphed over BouCan (Bouton and Canaries), Fond St Jacques Primary School, and Les Etangs Combined School.
Les Etangs had a particularly strong showing at the track meet, compiling 412 points on the day to end with 467 overall. They had been at the back of the pack with just 43 points after the ball throw. But Soufrière Combined were able to pile up 483 points on the track. Already leading with 66 coming into Friday, they ended well clear with 549 points. Fond St Jacques totalled 418 points, and BouCan 412.
Soufrière Combined were able to top four of the eight age and sex categories, with five student-athletes capturing 11 individual gold medals and 13 individual medals in all. The Under-7 girls included 1-2 finishes for Ava Edward and Mekeije Epiphane, who each got a gold medal and a silver medal.
In the second year Under-11, Hadassah Jules got three gold medals. Chance Isaac was also a triple gold medallist among the boys, ensuring an Under-11 sweep for Soufrière. And Rhayne Henry did the trick for the Under-13 girls.
With two gold medals, Etajh Alexander of Les Etangs won the Under-7 boys. His schoolmate, Naomi Buscette got a gold, silver, and bronze in the Under-9 girls.
For BouCan, Ihknaton Hippolyte brought two gold medals and a silver medal in the Under-9 boys division. Kem Deterville swept the board in the Under-13 boys with three gold medals.
