Two-time Olympic sailor Luc Chevrier dominated his category, and six junior sailors between the ages of 10 and 15 represented Saint Lucia this week at the 33° Schoelcher Nautical Week. Organised by the Cercle Nautique de Schoelcher, the event, which got underway in Martinique last Friday, concluded on Wednesday, with over 40 competitors from the Caribbean, Europe, and North America.
Chevrier, 25, competed at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 for Saint Lucia, and he has his sights locked on becoming the first sailor to fly the cerulean blue three times at the Summer Games. In Martinique, he was outstanding in the ILCA 7 category, securing first place in all of his races.
According to a release from the Saint Lucia Yacht Club, “His stellar performance serves as an inspiration for the next generation of Saint Lucian sailors, demonstrating the rewards of dedication, training, and passion for the sport.”
Along with Chevrier, the youth sailing team represented with determination and skill under the expert guidance of Frederic ‘Freddy’ Sweeney, a seasoned sailor and coach. The team benefited greatly from his extensive knowledge and mentorship. His dedication and strategic insights were instrumental in their strong performance throughout the competition.
The youngest, Mia McCabe Gill, is just 10 years old. She was one of four girls, along with Lily de Freitas (12), Kaylee Louis (14), and Madilyn de Freitas (14). Xavier Augustin (12) and Oliver Richings (15) were the two male sailors.
