On Wednesday, Philomen’ Eldica’ Nicholas , affectionately known as Miss Eldica, Ma Dico, or Ma Nicholas, marked a remarkable milestone as she celebrated her 110th birthday.

At her age, she qualifies as an extremely rare supercentenarian- a person who is 110 years old or older.

Her great-granddaughter, Christa St. Ange, shared insights into the centenarian’s rich background and enduring spirit, highlighting her deep roots in Saint Lucia and her remarkable journey through life.

Born on October 23, 1914, in Dauphin, a village in La Borne, Nicholas spent over 80 years in Grand Riviere.

Christa noted that although her great-grandmother was never formally educated, she cherished her few days in adult literacy night classes. “Granny was able to recall the few days… she said she didn’t spend too long,” Christa explained.

Despite this formal limited education, Nicolas takes pride in her ability to spell her name and other words, often demonstrating this skill to visitors.

Nicolas has worked primarily in agriculture throughout her life, contributing to her family’s livelihood.

Crista recounted, “Granny grew up in a rural community… where she worked on Marquis Estate.” This connection to the land and community remains a central aspect of her identity.

Nicholas is part of a large family, having two children, nine grandchildren, over 25 great-grandchildren, and a growing number of great-great-grandchildren. Christa shared, “Sadly, both of her children have passed away.” Yet the centenarian’s family continues to thrive.

Health-wise, Nicholas is surprisingly robust for her age, with no significant medical issues.

Christa remarked, “Granny’s as healthy as can be… she walks, she does most things independently.” Her daily routine reflects a life of resilience; she wakes at dawn and maintains her independence, enjoying activities such as reading and praying her rosary.

Faith plays a crucial role in her life. Christa emphasised, “God holds a very special place in her life. She’s a very devout Catholic.”

This spiritual commitment has provided her strength through life’s challenges, and she is known for her prayers for family and friends, often expressing concern for their well-being.

As she celebrates this extraordinary milestone, Nicolas experiences the love of her family and community. Christa noted, “Today she’s celebrating as much as we are,” highlighting the joy and gratitude felt by all who know her.

According to her family, Miss Eldica’s life story is a testament to resilience, love, and an enduring spirit.

As she turns 110, her legacy continues to inspire those around her, with a reminder to all of the importance of faith, family, and community.
