The newest US state to permit ‘human composting’ is New York.
The process has been described as an environmentally beneficial alternative to burial or cremation, turning a deceased person’s remains into soil.
A body is placed in a container and allowed to decay over a period of weeks.
The process is also known as ‘natural organic reduction.’

Washington became the first US state to legalise the process in 2019.
Following suit were Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, and California.
After about a month – and a heating process to kill off any contagion – loved ones can get the resulting soil to plant flowers, vegetables, or trees.
