The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has described as “false and unfounded” claims that a toxic substance is being served in drinks, resulting in significant adverse health effects.
In a statement issued on Friday, the ministry stated that there is currently no evidence to support the claims circulating in a WhatsApp voice note.
“Additionally, preliminary investigations suggest that this may be a resurfaced voice note which has the potential to cause unnecessary alarm especially during this festive season. We urge members of the public to refrain from sharing unverified information and to rely on official communications from the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs for accurate updates,” it said.
“The health, safety and well-being of the public remains the top priority of the Ministry of Health. Should there be any credible public health concerns, the ministry will communicate promptly and transparently.”
The ministry also took the opportunity to urge the public to act responsibly during the Christmas season.
It advised residents to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and unhealthy foods; practise good hygiene, including frequent handwashing and sanitisation; ensure safe driving and sexual practices; stay up to date with vaccinations and health checkups; be mindful of their mental health and seek support when needed; and adhere to safety guidelines, especially in crowded or public areas.
