Aasia Laurencin bids farewell to Nanjing after her run.

Saint Lucia’s sole representative at this weekend’s World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, Aasia Laurencin advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 60m hurdles. It was her first time competing for Saint Lucia, after a lengthy citizenship registration process.

Laurencin, 22, a sociology graduate student at the University of Michigan, traded in maize and blue for cerulean blue. Travelling with coach Steven Rakewsky, she realised a long-held dream by competing for Saint Lucia, a country she visits often, and where her family has earned great acclaim.

The debutant finished in 8.06 seconds in Heat 3 of the opening round. Running 8.06 seconds, the 16th-fastest time, she qualified by position for the second round. The several-time former All-American did not have the best run in the semis, finishing in 8.60 seconds in Heat 2, eighth in that section. World Record holder Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas was clocked at 7.72 seconds to win her second World Indoor gold medal.

Coming in with a career-best and national record of 7.97 seconds, Laurencin just last week finished in sixth place at the 2025 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA.

The granddaughter of former St Jude Hospital chief surgeon Denis Laurencin, Aasia will now turn her attention to the outdoor season. She just missed out on qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 100m hurdles and will be eager to punch her ticket to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan next September.
