The Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) unveiled plans for this year’s community jazz events on Tuesday during a sponsorship ceremony at WASCO’s southern headquarters in Vieux Fort.
The initiative, part of the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, will bring live performances to ten communities across the country, blending tourism, culture and local empowerment.
Organisers described the event as “a special moment of partnership and celebration,” marking a collaborative effort between the SLTA, the Community Tourism Agency (CTA), the Cultural Development Foundation, and the Events Company.
Tourism, Community and Jazz
SLTA Chairman Thaddeus Antoine emphasised that the festival is a key marketing tool for Saint Lucia while aligning with the government’s vision of community-driven tourism.
“It is important that in growing the festival, we look to the communities. So when the events take place in the communities, it affords exposure,” he said.
Dahlia Guard, CEO of the CTA, echoed this sentiment: “What better way to bring tourism into the communities than by all of the communities hosting their jazz events in the various communities.”
Shift in Festival Branding
SLTA CEO Louis Lewis framed the expansion as more than just an adjustment – “a significant move” that amplifies Saint Lucia’s diverse cultural landscape.
“…Tourism is our lifeblood and it cannot be centralised or locked into one place; it has to be something that showcases the character of Saint Lucia … and there is no other festival that has this sort of model,” Lewis said.
Sustainability and Local Flair
Before receiving symbolic sponsorship cheques, community representatives were urged to adopt eco-friendly practices, showcase their area’s distinct culture and ensure events are professionally managed.
While some events will be free, others will feature paid performances with regional headline acts.
