Jamaica: Some Teen Girls Have Multiple Sex Partners

CaribWorldNews, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Weds. June 3, 2009: Some fourteen-year-old girls in Jamaica have had up to six sexual partners, a new study claims.

The study examining risky sexual behaviour of children under the age of 14 by the island`s Ministry of Health`s National HIV/STI Programme, made the startling claim this week.

Dr. Kevin Harvey said the study of 3,000 school children, aged 10 to 14 years old, found that eighteen per cent of those studied reported that they had had at least six partners, and these were children between the ages of 10 and 14 years old.

He also said that 56 per cent of those sexually active had had two or more sex partners while 48 per cent of the sexually active males in the study reported `no condom use at the last sex.`

Also, nine per cent of the boys and 24 per cent of girls in the study said they were forced into their first sexual encounter.

Harvey also revealed that data from the 2006 youth risk and behaviour resilience survey conducted among 1,370 participants aged 15 to 19 years, showed that 59 per cent reported having sex at least once.
