Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles has officially been appointed as Governor-General of Saint Lucia, ending his three-year tenure “acting” in the role.
An announcement, published in an Extraordinary Government of Saint Lucia Gazette on Thursday, January 23, confirmed the appointment by His Majesty the King.
“It is notified for general information that His Majesty the King has been pleased to appoint Mr Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles as Governor-General of Saint Lucia, pursuant to section 19 of the Constitution of Saint Lucia, Cap. 1.01, with effect from November 1, 2024,” the notice stated.
Charles had served in an acting capacity since November 11, 2021, four months after the Saint Lucia Labour Party came into office. He replaced Sir Neville Cenac who demitted office on October 31 that year.
While some questioned the prolonged “acting” designation, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre defended it last year, stating, “this is nothing unusual.”
Over the past two decades, Saint Lucia has been served by three Governors-General: Dame Pearlette Louisy (1997–2017), Sir Neville Cenac (2018–2021), and now Charles.
