The Ministry of Health is reminding citizens to practise healthy sexual behaviours over the Christmas holidays.
The advice was given by Senior Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr Gail Gajadhar, who stressed the importance of contraceptives and abstinence as safeguards against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
This reminder comes just weeks after the ministry reported over 1,000 active cases of HIV on the island.
“It’s the holiday season for the parties, delicious food, cocktails and romantic hookups. Sexually transmitted infections are common – an unwanted gift that keeps on giving. Safe sex practices equal STI protection. Zero sexual contact equals STI prevention,” cautioned Dr Gajadhar in a statement.
She also stressed the importance of getting tested regularly, particularly when interacting with a new sexual partner.
“Genital rash, sores or discharge equal signs of infections so get tested and avoid sexual contact. Use condoms for protection and keep them handy for those unexpected encounters. New sexual partners get tested before any sexual activity. At risk for HIV? Use PrEP [pre-exposure prophylaxis],” the medical official added.
Research shows that the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease significantly increases over the holiday season.
