Health Ministry Reports Smooth Start to Operations at Dr. Betty Wells Urban Polyclinic

Health officials have reported a successful start to operations at the Dr. Betty Wells Urban Polyclinic, which opened on Monday.

Despite initial concerns regarding a leaky roof in the waiting area – an issue that Minister of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs Moses Jn Baptiste confirmed would be addressed – the ministry stated in a release on Thursday that the transition of medical services from the Castries Wellness Centre to the new polyclinic has been “smooth and efficient.”

Senior Medical Officer for Medical and Urgent Care at the polyclinic, Dr. Delphina Vernor, expressed satisfaction with the facility’s operations so far.

“The Ministry of Health is very pleased so far with the opening of the Dr. Betty Wells Urban Polyclinic. As you know, we had been experiencing issues at the Castries Wellness Centre, which had been temporarily operating from the La Clery Wellness Centre. Recognising the inadequacy of that setup to accommodate all patients in the Castries basin, we are very happy to officially welcome patients to this new facility,” she said.

Dr. Vernor highlighted the services currently available during the first phase of operations.

“Patients from surrounding areas have started coming in, and as word spreads, we expect more individuals to access treatment here. We are currently offering general medical clinics and managing minor emergencies, such as small cuts, falls, and symptoms like coughs and colds. We hope these services will help alleviate patient flow at the OKEU Hospital and other nearby facilities,” she added.

A registered nurse at the facility shared insights into the patient experience, noting the improved layout and accessibility of services.

“The facility is very well-designed. I have adequate space, and all clients I see are very comfortable. Although some patients mentioned needing to take two buses to reach the polyclinic, overall, they are pleased with the improved space, layout, and access to pharmacy services and medications,” the nurse shared.

The Dr. Betty Wells Urban Polyclinic, located at the Dr. Winston C. Parris Medical Complex – formerly Victoria Hospital – is designed to serve as a central hub for healthcare delivery

in the urban area. In addition to general medical and urgent care services, the facility houses the National Eye Clinic, which offers specialised services, including diabetic retinopathy screening and laser treatment.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has encouraged the public to take advantage of the comprehensive healthcare services provided at the polyclinic.
