One of Saint Lucia’s most promising young athletes, Asa Francis, continues to improve after setting another personal-best mark this weekend in the USA.
Francis competed at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross-Country Championships.
A sophomore student-athlete at Coppin State University, Francis ran 27:39.1 for the eight-kilometre (five-mile) course at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center in Smyrna, Delaware. He finished 29th, four places behind fellow CSU Eagle sophomore, Humed Nura.
Both the Coppin State men’s & women’s cross country teams took seventh in their respective races, hosted by Delaware State. Nura finished in 27:19.8. Senior Etiam Torgbenu’s 28:07.1 was good for 32nd place. Abdul Razak and freshman Dentry Mortimer rounded out the scoring five in 29:20.3 and 29:32.9.
Saint Lucia’s Jayeed Norbal (31:28.8) also competed for the Eagles men.
Francis, a graduate of Vieux Fort Comprehensive, has spoken openly of his goal to represent Saint Lucia at the highest level of the sport. If he is to do so, it will be on the track.
Mainly an 800m runner, he is less than three seconds away from the national record in that event.
Francis has lowered his time in the two-lap event from 1:54.96 in 2022 to 1:50.67 in May of this year. In 2025, he will take aim at Marbeq Edgar’s 2017 national-record run of 1:47.83.
He also be aware of the big jump he will need to take to compete internationally. The standard for the 2025 World Championships is 1:44.50.
