The second leg of the fourth Eastern Caribbean Challenge, a series of six marathons across six nations, began on Monday in Saint Lucia.
Hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information, in collaboration with the Ministry for Youth Development and Sports, the special event brings together experienced marathoners and enthusiasts to the island.
After the first race in Guadeloupe on Sunday, the 35 marathon runners arrived on board the MSC Virtuosa on Monday morning and began their race – a 26-mile (42.1 km) circuit starting and ending at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium – around 9 a.m.
After the race, the participants will have the opportunity to meet with aspiring young athletes from Saint Lucia’s Sports Academy.
After leaving Saint Lucia, the participants will cruise to and race in Barbados, Grenada, St Vincent & the Grenadines, and Martinique. The final race will be on Saturday.
Participants range in age from 32 to 82 years and are all recreational runners with the goal of completing marathons in as many countries as possible. The competitors include doctors, engineers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and teachers, all of whom balance their careers with a shared passion for marathoning and global travel.
