Housing Minister Richard Frederick has announced that all mechanisms are in place for demolishing the CDC Block X building in Castries on Sunday and Monday, October 1 and 2.
“We are hoping that come Tuesday morning, the third of October this year Block X will no longer be a structure that is standing,” Frederick stated.
He said all the occupants were out of the building in a very smooth transition.
“I am sure all of you heard all the brouhaha – all the naysayers were coming with in terms of how government is going to deal with the situation,” Frederick told reporters.

However, he reiterated that with him holding any ministerial portfolio, whatever is necessary within the law and reasonableness would be done to ensure no one is left behind.
Frederick disclosed that the authorities had put almost all the former CDC Block X tenants in better and in some instances, more expensive premises.
In addition, he said some former occupants have received assistance in constructing their own residences.
The Castries Central MP described the Block X building as structurally challenged, unfit for human habitation, and posing a threat to passersby.
“There were several incidents, no one knows what caused it, but there have been several chunks of concrete just falling from the building,” Frederick told reporters on Monday on the margins of a Cabinet meeting.
He recalled that a child escaped injury.
But the Minister explained that had the child been about three feet ahead, there might have been a fatality.
