DPLPS Dominate District 1 Track and Field

Hundreds of eager student-athletes and hundreds more teachers, parents, alumni, and supporters converged at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground as District 1 concluded its track and field championships on Tuesday. Comprising 10 schools, the island’s northernmost district was second at last year’s national interdistrict competition.

After poring over the D1 results, the blue and white of Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School emerged as champions with 391 points. Gros Islet Primary School were second with 344, and Monchy third on 230. Balata Combined took fourth place (197), and The Montesorri Centre (175) rounded out the top five. Grande Riviere Primary, Fond Assau Combined, Boguis / Des Barras, Babonneau, and La Guerre were the other competing schools.

In the Under-13 girls, Sapphire Parks was a double gold medallist. A student of TMC, she won the 1000m (3:45.7) and 600m (1:58.7). Jarvis Emmanuel was imperious among the boys, with triple gold for Balata Combined. He won the 1200m (4:14.7), 600m (1:56.3), and 300 (50.6). Veshawna Longville of DPLPS won the girls’ 80m (10.7) and 150m (20.3). Joann Maxius ran 50.8 to win the girls’ 300m for Gros Islet, Acer Emmanuel won the boys’ 150m in 20.9 seconds for DPLPS, and Jesse Joseph the 80m in 10.8 for Gros Islet Primary.

DPLPS won five of eight events in the U11 division. Avary Maryat starred, winning the boys’ 80m in 11.1 seconds, the 150m in 21.0, and the 300m in 51.7. Dequan Hippolite ran 2:10.8 to win the boys’ 600m, and Scarlette Burns 12.0 to win the girls’ 80m. The girls’ 150m was taken by Tamela Alexander in 23.3 for Gros Islet, the 300m by Kenycia Edward in 57.0 for Balata, and the 600m by Dillana Charles in 2:21.1 for Boguis.

Again in the U9 category, DPLPS took three of the four individual events. Zahyanae Louis doubled in the girls’ 80m (10.3) and 150m (26.7), whilst Rayel Williams ran 9.3 seconds to win the boys’ 80m. Turquan Biscette captured the boys’ 150m in 24.1 for Gros Islet.

The ever-exciting relays produced no shortage of thrills. DPLPS boys won the 4x100m in 57.0 seconds and Monchy girls in 1:00.1 in the U13 class. Monchy girls copped the 4x300m in  3:30.3, and the Gros Islet boys took the four-lap race. DPLPS topped three of the four relays in the U11’s, with wins in the boys’ and girls’ 4x150m (1:34.6 and 1:41.0), as well as the boys’ 4x75m (44.4). Gros Islet ran 50.0 for the 4x75m girls. In the U9, DPLPS girls won the 4x75m in 57.7, and Gros Islet boys won in 51.4.
