Saint Lucia police have cited unidentified ‘complications’ as the investigation into the recent fatal daylight shooting at Derek Walcott Square in Castries continues.
A medical practitioner pronounced Jahiem Papius of Baboneau dead following the shooting, which left another man in critical condition.
“This investigation is a very complicated one because of what has happened in terms of social media. So, I want to be very careful about making comments about this Derek Walcott Square homicide. I want to assure the public that at the appropriate time we will make releases regarding that matter,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Luke Defreitas told reporters on Monday.
“As complicated as that matter is, I do not want to say anything that would prejudice the investigation,” he explained.
Asked whether the issue related to social media postings of videos and images of alleged suspects, Defreitas reiterated his position.
“Again, I say there are complications, and I do not want to go into details. I would rather keep it at that,” the senior police officer told reporters.
Last week, Defreitas announced that investigators were pursuing leads since the fatal shooting.
At the time, he said he hoped the leads would soon bring the investigators closer to making arrests.
“We will spare no effort or resource to ensure that the perpetrators are expeditiously brought to justice. Such lawlessness cannot and will not be tolerated,” Defreitas warned.
