Defending champions Soufriere kicked off their 2024 Blackheart Football tournament with a 2-0 victory over Choiseul.
In front of a strong home crowd at the Soufriere Mini Stadium, the Sulphur City stars advanced to the next round, leaving their “noisy” neighbors to rue missed opportunities in this West Coast showdown.
The fixture delivered all the drama expected in a knockout clash.
The first half was a tug-of-war, with neither team fully gaining the upper hand. A goalless scoreline at the break reflected the even nature of the contest, with a spectacular save by Choiseul’s goalkeeper in the 35th minute, following a well-placed free kick, standing out as the only true highlight.
Chances flowed more freely in the second half, as evidenced by an early effort from Choiseul that rattled the crossbar. Both teams squandered several one-on-one opportunities, leaving fans visibly frustrated.
In the 68th minute, Choiseul appealed for a penalty, but the match officials waved off their claims, much to the visiting fans’ dismay. This decision weighed even heavier when Soufriere took the lead in the 75th minute with a direct free kick by Jahzani Henry.
As the clock wound down, Soufriere was presented with a chance to seal the game from the penalty spot in stoppage time. However, the crossbar came to Choiseul’s rescue, keeping the score at a narrow one-goal margin.
Eventually, however, Soufriere doubled their lead with virtually the last kick of the game, courtesy of Lance Andrew, whose goal sealed the win.
